"Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you are called so that you may inherit a blessing." (1 Peter 3:8-9)
Devotional: Character... is defined by how one presents themselves in the presence of others. In this text, Peter lists five-character traits believers should aspire to model – being of the same mind; being responsive to the needs of our neighbors; extending love towards one another; caring for our brothers and sisters; and honoring others above ourselves. When we do these things, we show the attributes of Christ being revealed through us. These attributes are seen in the teachings of Christ as He modeled them before His followers. Christians should not seek retribution against those who have wronged them. But rather, we should bless them so that we may receive the blessing that God has in store for us. This is what we have been called to do!
Prayer: Heavenly Father… help us to demonstrate the kind of character that pleases You and honors others above ourselves. May our response be to bless and not repay, for insult or harm done towards us. I pray this prayer, in Jesus' name. Amen!
Reflection Question: How do you respond to evil or insult? Ask Christ to help you to respond in a way that is pleasing and acceptable to Him.
